Queiroz: I'm Close To United Deal

Carlos Queiroz claims his imminent return to the club puts him in pole position to become Sir Alex Ferguson's eventual successor.

Queiroz has become available after parting company with Real Madrid following a disappointing season at the Bernabeu.

The former Reds assistant admits he is currenty finalising negotiations at United with media reports suggesting he will be officially unveiled on Friday.

Carlos confirmed that only the legalities of the deal are to be ironed out before he can return to Old Trafford.

"It's practically a done deal," Queiroz told the Portuguese press. "There are just some legal details to sort."

The Mozambique-born former Portugal coach believes his return to the club on a long-term contract makes him favourite to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson when he calls time on his reign as Reds boss.

"Manchester United's offer is not one to turn down," said Queiroz. "It's a long-term contract which puts me as favourite to become club manager."

Queiroz orignally joined United in June 2002 after leading South Africa to World Cup qualification earlier that year.

His impressive CV boasts time as Portugal national team coach and his acclaimed development of the likes of Rui Costa and Luis Figo at youth level.
